Chung's home in Chungwoondong where the late business magnate spent most of his life was packed with mourners for the second day Friday. Among them was the commander of the U.S. Forces in South Korea, General Thomas Schwartz.

Letters of condolences and wreaths have also flown in from across the nation and overseas.

On Thursday, President Kim Dae-jung sent his chief of staff to pay condolences for him. Three former presidents and leaders of political parties, economic and social organizations also joined the mourners.

Chung, who symbolized South Korea's post-war economic miracle, died Wednesday night of complications from pneumonia. He was 86. Born into a poverty-stricken farming family in what's now North Korea, Chung built a vast business empire with empty hands which stretches into dozens of business lines from autos, ships to semiconductors, construction to electronics.
