Brazilian researchers are poised to launch stem cell studies in earnest.

According to Brazilian news media, Mayana Zatz, a genetics professor of the Bioscience Institute at the Universidade de São Paulo, has obtained approval from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development for stem cell research.

His team said the approval marks a watershed moment in the fight against incurable diseases.

In August, the Bioscience Institute gave the nod to 41 research plans on stem cells. Of those, a proposal submitted by Zatz’s team was the only one concerning the study of human embryonic stem cells.
