South Korea's Hyundai Group and North Korea have agreed to get operations of Hyundai’s tour program to the North’s scenic Mt. Geumgang back on the right track.
Hyundai Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun said the two sides made the agreement to normalize the stalled project from next Friday.
Returning from a one-day trip to Gaesong city Friday, Hyun told reporters the two sides had agreed to reimplement the tour program in time with the project’s seventh anniversary.
She made the trip to the North Korean border city as part of the group’s efforts to reconcile with the North. The chairwoman met with Ri Jong-hyuck, vice chairman of the North’s Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, which is in charge of the international tourism project.
Hyun's visit came after a series of disputes over the recent dismissal of a Hyundai executive. The North halved the daily quota of South Korean visitors to Mt. Geumgang to 600 after ex-Hyundai Asan President Kim Yoon-kyu, a Pyongyang favorite, was ousted on suspicions of embezzling large sums of company and state funds for the inter-Korean project.
