U.S. Seeks to Teach NK of Outside World

The U.S. State Department says it will expand broadcasts and provide literature to North Korea to allow its people to learn more about the outside world.

A State Department source on Sunday said measures proposed by non-governmental organizations include expanding Korean-language broadcasting, increasing medium-wave radio broadcasts and providing radios or other devices capable of receiving foreign broadcasts in the North.

Also planned are the provision of foreign literature and the recording of programming onto cassette and video tapes for use in the country.

The State Department, however, said it will exclude measures that could endanger North Koreans given the North's strict position on foreign media and information.
