The Cultural Heritage Administration will keep the landmark Namdaemun, or "south gate," as National Treasure No. 1.

In a cultural committee meeting Monday, the body said it wants to avoid public misunderstanding and confusion, but that it will discuss early next year stripping a number of treasures of the designation.

Meanwhile, KBS has learned that eight of the 14 committee members opposed the plan to change Namdaemun's designation.

Most of the members said people misunderstand the number system in downplaying its importance.
