A locally developed wireless Internet service will be officially adopted as a global technology standard some time next month.

Information and Communication Minister Chin Dae-je told reporters Monday that participants of a September meeting of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Taiwan had agreed to adopt the wireless system, dubbed “WiBro,” as a global standard.

Chin made the remarks after attending a ceremony presenting a trial performance of the technology that was held as part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

WiBro is a homegrown technical standard developed using U.S. technology giant Intel Corp.'s WiMax wireless platform.

The system allows wider and faster broadband Internet access through mobile phones and other portable devices at more affordable prices.
