Professor Hwang Woo-suk says he will officially release the results of an ongoing ethics probe on his research team's embryonic stem cell work.
Arriving at the San Francisco International Airport early Wednesday, the stem cell pioneer said the internal probe would be judiciously executed so as to not leave any shred of doubt over ethics-related questions, adding that the results would be published upon the probe's completion.
Hwang and his team were thrown into confusion in the wake of U.S. scientist Gerald Schatten's abrupt termination of his partnership with the Koreans earlier this week. Schatten's departure, which he claimed resulted from ethical questions over how Hwang's team had obtained human eggs for its experiments, sparked an exodus of organizations led by the American researcher from the World Stem Cell Hub project.
On the question of how to respond to the organizations' departure, the Korean scientist said he expects to be able to work with them again once the truth surrounding the controversy is revealed.
He added that the issue should not be handled 'emotionally', as the stem cell hub project is a noble-minded venture that aims to share homegrown technology with people across the world.
The professor did not specify the purpose of his U.S. trip, simply saying he had come to possibly accept a potential award.
Asked whether he has any plan to meet Schatten, he curtly answered, “Probably not.”
Hwang is expected to return home Thursday via Los Angeles after attending an unspecified event.
