Int'l Body Drops 'Sudal' as Typhoon Name

The Korea Meteorological Administration on Thursday said an international agency on reducing typhoon damage has replaced "sudal (otter)" with "mirinae (Milky Way Galaxy)" as a typhoon name.

Sudal is one of ten names proposed by South Korea.

In its 38th annual meeting in Vietnam, the Typhoon Committee also excluded the North Korea-proposed "pongsonpa (touch me not flower)" and "maemi (cicada)" and instead included "noul (after glow)" and "mujigae (rainbow)."

In its previous meeting in November last year, the committee decided to drop from next year four names including sudal.

In its 39th meeting next year, the committee will also remove "nabi (butterfly)," "matsa" and "longwang" as proposed by South Korea, Laos and China.

Founded in 1968, the committee has 14 member nations including South Korea, China, Japan and Vietnam.

The committee in 1997 named 140 typhoons in the language of the affect nations instead of English.
