Nature: Future of Stem Cell Hub Uncertain

The British science journal Nature says the resignation of stem cell pioneer Hwang Woo-suk from all of his public posts has made uncertain the future of the World Stem Cell Hub.

In an online article posted Thursday, the magazine said Hwang's admission of ethical lapses in his research and resignation will send shockwaves throughout the global scientific community.

The article also noted South Korea's support for the disgraced scientist despite his admission, adding news media are carrying stories on women lining up to donate eggs.

Nature said whether the global scientific community will accept Hwang is unclear despite his intent to continue his research.

A British expert in regenerative medicine, Colin McGuckin, said ethics and morality start in the lab and that young staff studying stem cells need protection, but that South Korea's research is not just about one man.
