The Air Force's explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) teams began mine removal operations Monday around Mt. Komdan air defense battery in Kimpo, western Seoul, the location of the Air Force's Air Defense Command, and another region near the Haeundae battery in Pusan.

The Air Force decided to undertake the operations in those areas as they are near large cities, and long-buried mines are in danger of being exposed or flushed away by heavy rains.

During the operations, the EOD teams will mobilize special equipment and experts to prevent any possible accidents.

The operations will be conducted between April and June and September and November to avoid weather conditions that could increase accidents.

From 1998 through 2000, the Air Force has removed 5,255 mines nationwide through the operations and will complete the two new operations in Mount Komdan and Haeundae by the end of next year.
