It was learned Tuesday that Ra Jong-yil, former deputy director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), has been named ambassador to Britain.

After the launch of the Kim Dae-jung government in 1998, Ra took up the NIS post and served as a special foreign affairs and security assistant to the president of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party.

Outgoing Ambassador to London Choi Sung-hong will return home Thursday to assume the vice foreign minister post.
