The Upper House of the Russian Federation ratified Wednesday the South Korea-Russia legal cooperation agreement concluded in May 1999 when President Kim Dae-jung visited Moscow.

The agreement has paved the way for the two countries to extend assistance mutually in criminal investigation and court proceedings.

In case such legal assistance is deemed jeopardizing the sovereign power, public order and national security of one party, it may refuse to extend the assistance.

The Duma, or the Lower House, already endorsed the agreement March 14 as did the National Assembly of South Korea in December 1999.
