South Korean Visitors to N. Korea Total Over 87,000 in 2005

The number of South Koreans visiting the North has risen for the ninth straight year.

The Unification Minister announced that the number of visitors to North Korea, excluding visitors to the Mount Geumgang resort, totaled over 87,000 last year, an increase of 3.3 times from 2004.

In 1997, the number of South Korean visitors exceeded a thousand for the first time, with the total reaching 1,015. The number significantly increased to over 5,500 in 1999 and to over 12,800 in 2002.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors to Mount Geumgang totaled some 298,000 last year, up 11 percent from the previous year.
