The Ministry of Construction and Transportation said Wednesday the government will designate some areas of Incheon International Airport a duty-free zone for cargo flights in June at the earliest, .

Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIA) asked the administration to name a 990,000-square-meter lot near the new airport a duty-free zone to help turn it into the most popular freight storage venue in northeastern Asia.

After the special area is developed, 1.7 million tons of cargo in 2005 and 2.5 million tons in 2010 are expected to pass through it.

The IIA plans to eventually turn 1.9 million-square-meters of land near the island airport into a customs-free freight area by 2020.
