A 300-year-old stone monument from the Joseon Dynasty will be officially returned to its original resting place in North Korea next month.
Head of the Cultural Heritage Administration Yoon Hong-joon said Tuesday that committees of the two Koreas on organizing the return of the monument had agreed to return the "Bukgwan Daecheopbi" to the communist state on March 1st.
Working-level officials from the two sides are scheduled to meet in the North’s border city of Gaesong next Wednesday to work out details of the return, including the method of transporting the monument.
Last October, the stone monument was returned from Japan and has since been on display at the Independence Hall of Korea.
The monument was built in 1707 to mark a volunteer army's victory over Japanese invaders in the late 16th century.
Japanese soldiers during the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 stole the monument, which then rested in the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo before being returned.
