The government is seeking to introduce a system of electronic passes for visitors to North Korea.

The Unification Ministry said Tuesday that it plans to replace the current paper passes with electronic cards that use an automated recognition system, or radio frequency identification, before July.

A ministry official said radio frequency ID tags will also be attached to goods passing through the border.

The government’s move comes amid the growing number of South Koreans visiting the industrial complex in the North Korean border city of Gaesong and the North's Mount Geumgang resort.

The radio frequency ID card would contain all the personal data required by Seoul on visitors to the North.
