Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon says he is optimistic over resolving North Korea's nuclear standoff through the six-way talks.
Ban said Wednesday that though the talks have stalled due to U.S. sanctions on the North, the bigger picture is bright given North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's visit to China last month and Chinese President Hu Jintao's trip to Washington in April.
In his opening speech to the annual gathering of the nation's overseas-based ambassadors in Seoul, Ban also urged a diverse, balanced and practical diplomacy for South Korea.
On his candidacy for United Nations secretary-general, he asked for the ambassadors' support and pledged efforts to win the race through his experience and public support.
The three-day envoys' meeting will discuss the North's nuclear program, developing the nation into an advanced trade economy and improving overseas consular services.
Diplomats will also visit Saturday the Gaesong Industrial Complex in North Korea.
