All class rooms nationwide are now linked to cyber space as the government has finished the first stage of its "school information infrastructure buildup project.

President Kim Dae-jung was on hand at a ceremony marking the completion of the ambitious informationization project. At the ceremony held Friday at Gyeonggi Commercial High School in Seoul, the president said South Korea has now laid the groundwork for building a strong, knowledge-based, information-oriented society.

The project has linked more than ten thousand elementary, middle and high schools across the nation with nearly one million personal computers with high speed internet connections.

The government spent more than one billion U.S. dollars on the three-year project. But officials say it's only the first stage of a long-term, multi-stage, multi-billion dollar undertaking.

Officials say the nation's school information infrastructure is now second only to Singapore.
