With the proposed introduction of the Product Liability (PL) Law in July 2002, manufacturers are advised to prepare for liability suits from consumers hurt by their products.

The PL Law, which the National Assembly passed in 1999, calls for not only manufacturers but also distributors of defective products to assume responsibility for any damage they inflict on consumers.

The law stipulates consumers will receive compensation only if they prove a direct link between their injuries and the products in question.

Industry sources said that the PL Law will enable consumers to sue more easily for damages and force manufacturers to improve product safety to enhance their competitiveness in international markets.
