Sungnyemun Opens Central Gate to Public

Sungnyemun, part of a fortress wall in downtown Seoul and designated as National Treasure No. 1, opened its central gate Friday for the first time in a century.

An array of reenacted events celebrated the landmark event for Sungnyemun, which is also known as Namdaemun or "south gate."

The central gate was closed in 1907 after the destruction of its walls and the construction of roads for military tanks in its vicinity.
