Inter-Korean Travel, Trade Jump This Year

Travel between the two Koreas has jumped almost 90 percent this year and cross-border trade has risen more than 30 percent.

The Unification Ministry said Thursday that some 12,800 people from the two Koreas visited each other between January and February, a jump of 90 percent from 6,700 in the same period last year.

About 7,100 people crossed the inter-Korean border in February, more than twice the figure year-on-year, but only 33 North Koreans visited South Korea.

Cross-border trade, meanwhile, reached 129 million dollars in the year's first two months, up 35 percent from 95 million dollars in the same period last year.

The ministry said inter-Korean travel and trade grew thanks to the full-fledged construction of the Gaesong Industrial Park and rises in processing-on-commission trade and private assistance to the North.
