SK's Top Negotiator on NK Nuclear Issue Leaves For Tokyo

South Korea's top negotiator over North Korea's nuclear weapons program is in Tokyo Saturday to discuss ways to resume the stalled talks.

Deputy Foreign Minister Chun Young-woo will take part in the Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD), which is to be held in the Japanese capital from Sunday through Thursday.

The NEACD is a non-governmental regional security forum, but is expected to bring chief delegates of the six countries involved in the talks together for bilateral and multilateral meetings.

North Korea's top envoy to the nuclear talks, Kim Kye-gwan, arrived in the Japanese capital city on Friday also to participate in the secutity talks. Upon arrival, he said he "would not reject" if the US proposes bilateral meetings addressing ways to resume the stalled nuclear negotiations.

The international talks designed to bring a peaceful end to the latest dispute over North Korea's nuclear ambitions have been stalled since November due North Korea's boycott.

The communist country has agreed to give up its nuclear programs in exchange for economic and diplomatic benefits, but new tension has arisen between the U.S. and the North over the alleged counterfeiting of U.S. dollars and other illicit activities.
