A lawmaker of the ruling Uri Party says North Korea wants to hold inter-Korean summit talks in Pyongyang around the time of National Foundation Day, which falls on October 3.
According to Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Choi Sung made the statement in materials distributed prior to a parliamentary questioning session of government officials on foreign and security affairs Tuesday.
Choi said he had learned of the desire for a summit after meeting North Korean sources during recent visits to the Gaesong industrial complex in the North and Beijing.
According to the sources, Pyongyang is hoping to hold the second round of inter-Korean summit talks in October, adding that the possibility of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visiting Seoul seems unlikely considering recent geopolitical situations.
The first round of inter-Korean talks was held in June 2000 when then-President Kim Dae-jung visited Pyongyang.
