Gov't Mulls Infrastructure Projects in N. Korea

The government is considering launching 16 infrastructure projects in North Korea.

A Unification Ministry official in Seoul said Wednesday that the government completed in February drafting a blueprint of the projects, including costs as estimated by private think tanks.

Proposed projects include repair of a highway linking Gaesong and Pyongyang, modernization of the port of Nampo and the transmission of two million kilowatts of electricity to the North.

The official said that since 2000, the blueprint has been drafted quarterly to reflect the North's needs that have been discussed on several occasions.

Details, however, have yet to be discussed, and the official said Seoul is unlikely to propose the plan at inter-Korean ministerial talks next week in Pyongyang.
