North Korea has asked for emergency cash loans as a condition for its return to the stalled six-party nuclear talks.

Diplomatic sources said Friday that Pyongyang has asked a third country, namely China, for the loans to withstand U.S. financial sanctions, and that Beijing is considering given the talks' hiatus for nearly six months.

The North made the request last month at a private forum on Northeast Asian cooperation in Tokyo, with the chief negotiators to the talks attending.

Pyongyang has boycotted the talks in protest against U.S. financial sanctions, including a freeze on 24 million dollars of North Korean funds.
