The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has pledged efforts to protect and support North Korean defectors in China and Mongolia.
Announcing the organization's annual plan in a news conference in Washington Saturday, officials urged China to pass appropriate laws for refugees and improve support for North Korean defectors who apply for political asylum.
They urged against repatriating defectors back to the North, saying they fled their impoverished country to avoid famine, not for political reasons.
