S. Korean female named to E. Timor election management committee

A member of the National Election Commission was named to the U.N.'s international election management committee to oversee the election of East Timor's constitutional assembly legislators set for August 30.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Monday... U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan named Shon Bong-sook, to the post.

A female civil activist for women's participation in politics, Shon will depart for East Timor Monday to take up the post.

The five-member committee will operate until September 10 when 88 constitutional assembly members will be finalized by results of the election.

The assembly will enact the constitution of the newly born island nation.

Shon also attended an international election management committee meeting August 30 1999, when the people of East Timor voted on the future of the island.

East Timor is now under the United Nations' transitional administration.
