The World Food Program has urged South Korea to provide food aid to the hunger-stricken North Korea.

The U.N. agency's Asia director Tony Banbury said in a news conference in Seoul Friday that in talks with government officials, he asked that Seoul contribute to the program's target of 102 million dollars in assistance.

The program on Wednesday had agreed with Pyongyang to resume food aid to the North.

Sources said that though the amount requested to Seoul is unknown, Banbury asked for corn, wheat flour and vegetable oil.

A Unification Ministry official in Seoul said the government will consider the request through consultations with related ministries.
