Prime Minister Lee Han-dong led government officials, party leaders, and relatives of victims at a May 18th ceremony in Kwangju.

Lee said that the nation should carry on the spirit of the May 18th pro-democracy movement as a guide awakening the value of democracy and human rights.

According to the government's statistics, at least 180 students and citizens were killed during the bloody military crackdown on the pro-democracy uprising in 1980.
