The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said Saturday that it selected Daewoo Marine Co. to operate a car ferry route linking the South Korean port of Mokpo, South Cholla Province, to Lianyunggang in China's Jiangsu Province.

The car ferry project stems from a 1995 agreement between the two countries. However, two prior Korean shipping companies cancelled their plans for the service after getting licenses from the government.

The ministry made the selection under the condition that Daewoo, the sole bidder, will launch the route by September.
