Officials of the regional 2002 promotion committee said... the Taegu Complex, one of South Korea's 10 venues for the 2002 Would Cup finals, was officially opened on Sunday.
The stadium took four years and 294 billion won (U.S. $225 million) to build. It can seat 66,040 people, making it one of the largest sports arenas in the country.
It also houses state-of-the-art equipment like a 240mm liquid crystal display (LCD) score board and high-tech lighting, sound, and communication features.
The Taegu venue is the third such facility to open in preparation for next year's soccer extravaganza. Ulsan's Munsu Stadium was completed April 28 followed by the Suwon World Cup Stadium last Sunday.
It will be the site for the kick-off of the Confederations Cup May 30, with a match between South Korea and France. During the 2002 World Cup, it will host the match to determine the third and fourth place teams.
The FIFA Confederations Cup is considered a rehearsal for the World's premier sporting event. This year's cup pits eight national teams against each other, including last year's champion Mexico, and the two Asian co-hosts for the 2002 Cup.
