The spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR) says the number of North Korean refugees outside of South Korea reached 288 as of the end of last year.

Radio Free Asia reported Monday that UNHCR spokesman William Spindler noted the number included those who have not yet acquired permanent residency in host countries.

He added it does not represent the number of North Koreans who were granted asylum last year.

Spindler said that 2005 saw 215 cases of North Korean defectors seeking asylum. Among them only 122 received final decisions including 23 who were granted refugee status and 15 who received asylum pursuant to humanitarian considerations.
