Inter-Korean Festival to Open in Gwangju

The two Koreas will hold a four-day joint festival in South Korea's southwestern city of Gwangju from Wednesday to mark the sixth anniversary of the 2000 inter-Korean summit.

One-hundred-50 civic officials from each side, a hundred participants from overseas and government delegates will attend the event, which has been dubbed the grand reunification festival.

South Korean Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok will lead the Seoul delegation and the vice president of the North’s Committee for National Reconciliation, Kim Yong-dae, will head Pyongyang's.

Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung will give a speech at the opening ceremony at Gwangju World Cup Stadium before an expected crowd of some 30-thousand.

The North Koreans will arrive in Gwangju Wednesday morning via direct flight and visit a cemetery honoring pro-democracy activists.

They will return to Pyongyang Saturday after paying tribute at a memorial tower commemorating the 1929 uprising of Gwangju students against Japanese colonial rule.
