North Korea says it strongly opposes a plan by the new U.N. Human Rights Council to draw up resolutions assessing the human rights situations of countries around the world.
In a speech during the council’s general meeting Wednesday, the North's human rights delegate Choe Myong-nam called on the council to root out what he called the organization's practice of politically motivated criticism of certain countries' human rights matters.
Choe urged the council to reject any resolution aimed at criticizing a particular country's human rights conditions, saying such a resolution would effectively disregard that country’s will.
The North’s comments appeared to be a condemnation of a resolution adopted by the now defunct U.N. Commission on Human Rights that called on the North to improve its human rights situation.
