The ministry said Tuesday the Ministry of Environment plans to contact North Korea in a bid to form a joint team to carry out a study of the ecology in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

The investigation, if the North agrees on the research of the area separating the two Koreas, will take place in three stages.

The three stages comprise the analysis of topography and habitat in the region, the installation of a database for ecological information and the drawing up of an ecological map for the region.

The ministry also plans to start similar ecological research into the Civilian Control Line (CCL), or the farming restriction line south of the DMZ, in consultation with the Korea Forest Service.
