France routs S. Korea in Confederations Cup opener

World champion France routed South Korea 5-to-0 Wednesday on the opening day of the FIFA Confederations Cup. Australia upset defending champion Mexico 2-to-0.
Mexico's Claudio Suarez played his 157th international game, tying the record set by Egypt's Hossom Hassan.
In the first game played in Daegu, Steve Marlet scored in the eighth minute and Patrick Viera connected in the 18th, the first international goal for each.
Lee Woon-jae stopped Chistophe Dugarry's penalty kick in the 20th after Hong Myung-bo knocked down Nicolas Anelka in the penalty area, but Anelka made it 3-to-0 in the 33rd, Youri Djorkaeff got his 28th international goal in the 79th and Sylvain Wiltord scored in injury time.
France used many young players in its lineup.
France and Australia, who meet Friday in Daegu, lead Group A. South Korea and Mexico play in Ulsan.
Group B starts Thursday with co-host Japan playing Canada in Niigata and Brazil meeting Cameroon in Ibaraki. The tournament, meant to prepare organizers for next year's World Cup, ends June 10th in Yokohama, Japan.
