A South Korean has been named to head a U.N. committee, which will monitor parliamentary elections in East Timor.

Shon Bong-sook is a member of the U.N. international election management committee and also sits on the South Korean Election Management Commission.

The U.N. committee consists of three U.N. officials and two East Timorese election experts. It will operate until September 10th, when the half island nation elects 88 members of the constitutional assembly.

She monitored a referendum in East Timor in August, 19-99, when the island's people voted for independence from Indonesia's rule.

The new-born nation is now under a United Nations transitional administration.
