FIFA Vice President Chung Mong-joon said Tuesday, Pyongyang has officially delivered an invitation to Sepp Blatter, president of soccer's world governing body FIFA, to visit North Korea.

Chung, who also serves as joint head of the Korean World Cup Organizing Committee (KOWOC), made the remarks at a meeting with Korean reporters.

Blatter will reportedly confirm the invitation at a press conference to be held Thursday.

His trip to the North, if realized, is expected to pave the way for discussions on the possibility of hosting some matches of the 2002 World Cup finals in the North.

FIFA has held the position that it is open to North Korea hosting some matches of the premier soccer event to be co-hosted by South Korea and Japan.
