The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Tuesday Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will hold a send-off ceremony for the 18th wave of Korea Overseas Volunteers (KOVs) on Friday.

Some 180 new KOVs will be sent to work for two years with local people in 24 developing countries this year in fields like computers, agriculture and Korean language.

This number is about twice last year's figure, and 50 of them will be serving in 10 countries as an alternative to compulsory military service.

KOICA sent 911 KOVs to 32 countries from 1991 to 2000, and 225 of them are still in service in 24 countries.
