Flood Aid Delivery to Start Aug. 31

The Korean National Red Cross will deliver its first batch of flood relief aid to North Korea next Thursday.

President Han Wan-sang said Monday that items including rice, blankets, first aid kits and medicine are scheduled to leave Incheon port at the month's end.

But a Red Cross official said the delivery could be delayed due to weather and other conditions, adding that the large scale aid will have be to be shipped dozens of times via all possible seaways.

In inter-Korean Red Cross talks Saturday, the Seoul government decided to send rice, cement, iron rods, dump trucks, excavators and other supplies to the flood-stricken North.

Earlier South Korea had halted humanitarian aid to Pyongyang over its missile tests last month.
