A Japanese daily reports that the U.S. intelligence community has mixed views on an alleged nuclear test facility in Pungyee, North Korea.

The Mainichi Shimbun quoted U.S. sources as saying that in 2003 a dozen intelligence officials from the U.S. Defense and State departments had conducted a close inspection of suspicious tunnels in North Korea. They concluded that there was not enough evidence to determine whether they were nuclear test facilities but did not rule out the possibility.

Also, a high-ranking U.S. official said although a U.S. intelligence agency had observed suspicious movement around Punggyee, it did not have enough hard evidence to determine whether the facility was being developed for an underground nuclear bomb test.
