France completed a triple of international titles Sunday, relying on a Patrick Vieira header and a goalie's blunder to beat Japan 1-0 and win the Confederations Cup held in Yokohama, Japan.
Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, who had been outstanding throughout the tournament, made his only error to give away Japan's sole goal in the cup and the title.
France, the world's top ranked team, never gave away a serious chance to the Japanese, who rarely played better than their 44th ranking on Sunday.
The win added to their World Cup and European Championship trophy. Only Brazil has held a world continental and Confederations title at the same time, when they completed the feat in 1997.
Meanwhile, Australia stunned world No. 2 Brazil 1-0 Saturday to clinch third place in the Confederations Cup and add to its giant killing campaign here in Ulsan, South Korea.
Australia grabbed an upset 1-0 win over world champion France in the preliminaries and added the four-time world cup titlist to its list of victims in the playoff at Ulsan.
