The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) are considering designating the 2002 World Cup soccer festival to be co-hosted by Japan and Korea a "no tobacco" festival.
An official at the Geneva-based agency said Sunday the UN agency will send a delegation to Japan's World Cup Organizing Committee in July to request its support for the "no tobacco" campaign and discuss details to carry out the project.
The official said he was told that the FIFA secretary general faced no opposition from the secretary generals of Korea and Japan's World Cup organizing committees when he asked their opinions of the no-smoking campaign.
FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, is expected to announce its official position "at an appropriate time" after consultations with both countries' organizing committees.
