20 NK Defectors in S. Korea after Thailand Detention

Some 20 North Korean defectors recently released from a month-long detention in Thailand have entered South Korea.

Thai police arrested one-hundred-75 North Korean defectors late last month in downtown Bangkok, of which one-hundred-36 were sentenced to a 30-day detention for illegal entry.

Washington-based Radio Free Asia said Wednesday that after serving their sentence, the defectors were transferred to a Bangkok immigration detention center and more than 20 of them were confirmed to have arrived in South Korea.

RFA added that the rest are awating interviews with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees to secure refugee status. Many are reportedly considering going to the U.S.
