The United Nations Command in South Korea may transfer some of its control over civil operations in the demilitarized zone to the South Korean government.
A government official said Thursday that the U.N. Command and the United States Forces stationed in the South shared the view that the South Korean military should be in charge of the inter-Korean exchanges of people and goods.
Since the Korean War ended in 1953, the U.N. command managed the exchanges in accordance with the Armistice Agreement for the Restoration of the South Korean State.
Article 1 Section 10 of the armistice stipulates that civil administration and relief in the southern part of the demilitarized zone shall be the responsibility of the Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command.
