UN Special Rapporteur Decries NK Human Rights Abuses

U.N. Special Rapporteur on North Korean human rights Vitit Muntarbhorn said Thursday that the country puts disabled people into concentration camps outside Pyongyang and treats them inhumanely.

He said in a report that authorities send mentally disabled North Koreans to the so-called 49th concentration camp and place infertile disabled people in a separate detention center.

According to Muntarbhorn, North Korean citizens are often punished for acts against the regime committed by their relatives. They are banned from listening to foreign radio broadcasts and having a computer without permission.

The Thai rapporteur previously had made a similar report at a meeting of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights last month.

He has conveyed his concerns about human right abuses to North Korean authorities several times, but has been denied entry to the reclusive county.
