Written: 2006-10-23 14:22:07Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The average life expectancy for North Koreans was one of the lowest in the world outside of Africa.

Citing United Nations surveys, the National Statistical Office and the Bank of Korea said Monday that North Koreans are expected to live 64-point-five years on average between 2005 and 2010. This is the second lowest in Asia after the average for Iraqis, who can expect to live 61 years.

North Korean men live an average of 61-point-seven years, while women average 67-point-five years.

A South Korean central bank official attributed the low life expectancy to serious food shortages and insufficient medical and health care systems.
