No Sign of Imminent Nuke Tests in NK: Official

A government official said Wednesday that no significant movement has occurred since last Thursday in North Hamgyeong Province, a North Korean region home to a number of suspected sites for future nuclear tests.

According to the official, the government has detected no major signs of additional nuclear tests since October 19th, when North Korean leader Kim Jong-il met with Chinese President Hu Jintao’s special envoy, Tang Jiaxuan.

The official said that South Korean authorities have detected continual movement of personnel and vehicles in Kilju and other suspected test sites, but that such activity has not increased.

On Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry said Kim Jong-il told its special envoy that Pyongyang had no plans for additional tests.
