A U.S. expert says that counterfeiting and drug deals by North Korea have noticeably decreased in the past six months.

A researcher for the U.S. Congressional Research Service said in a Radio Free Asia interview Friday that there has been no evidence of North Korean activity in illicit narcotics or counterfeit currency during that period.

He observed that this may indicate Pyongyang has reined in its illegal activity.

However, he cited indications of growing production of counterfeit cigarettes and profits from such trade.

The researcher also noted Pyongyang's tendency to cut back on illicit activities under the global spotlight and increase them in other areas of less interest.

Radio Free Asia is a broadcaster funded by the U.S. government.
