The World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that South Korean Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo will declare a "No-Tobacco Korea-Japan World Cup finals" when he visits the agency in Geneva Tuesday.
The agency said in a press releas during the visit, Han will hold a meeting with WHO Director General Gro Harlem to discuss ways to put the tobacco-free World Cup finals into practice, and other issues including bilateral cooperation in providing medical aid to North Korea.
The agency attached special meaning to the smoke-free soccer festival, since the opening day of the 2002 FIFA World Cup coincides with the World No Tobacco Day set by the WHO on May 31st.
It also pointed out one of the major goals of the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC), which the WHO's 191 member states are negotiating, is tobacco-free sports.
